zone 8

This photo of my sheets was exposed at f 5.6 @ 1/500. But because it is a shot of white sheets it should be zoned for zone 8 due to its white textured quality. To correctly zone this image the new exposure would be f 2 @ 1/500.

Zone 3:

The dark foliage in this photograph represents zone 3 because it has texture and visible detail while it is still considered "black." The recommended exposure for this was f2.8 @ 1/250. The correct exposure is f8 @ 1/250.

Zone 1

This is zone 1 because of the tiny crack that is has slight tone of black and it has no texture. My camera originally calculated for me to shoot at f2 1/60. So, in order to zone, I would move to f2 at 1/1000. This would enable the blacks to be blacker and I went from zone 5 down 4 zones to zone 1.

Look at the beautiful suit I wore for the Jewish High Holidays! I'd say this is about a zone 2 -- I mean, come on, look at how dark and masculine it is (hardly any detail)! The recommended exposure was F4 @ 1/25, so I would need to change it to an F8 @ 1/25!

Zone 8

I missed class on Friday so I never was assigned a zone…. So I’m choosing zone 8! This photo can be considered in zone 8 due to the white color of Greig’s shirt (it is not in zone 9 because of the texture that can be seen). My camera calculated the exposure to be f16 at 1/500 so to get it from zone 5 to zone 8 I would need to change my settings to f16 at 1/60

Zone 2

This is zone 2 because of the dark black oven burner that is only slightly textured. The recommended exposure was f4 @ 1/15 so to shoot for zone 2, I would need to change the exposure to f4 @1/125.

Zone 4

The piano in this photograph is zone 4 because of its dark but textured tone. The recommended exposure was f5.6 @ 60/th, I shot it at f4 @ 125.

ZONE 7 -

This photograph is also zone 7. Because it contains light clothing and fair skin it should be in zone 7. My camera calculated the exposure to be f3.4 at 1/30, so to take it from zone 5 to 7 the exposure needs to be moved down two stops and changed to f3.4 at 1/8.

Fishing

This photo is zone 7 because of the beautiful fishermans sweater that I'm wearing, as I fish in J-Crew. The recommended exposure was 1/30 and f 4.5 (the lighting in J-Crew isn't too good). I would need to go to 1/8 at f 4.5 for zone 7.

Zone 3

This photo is zone 3 because of the dark shadows in the background and on the dog's face. The part of the dog that is not in focus is near black, but it still has some texture, which is why it is zone 3 and not zone 2. 

• Recommended exposure: 1/100 at 5.6
• Correct exposure: 1/160 at 5.6

Zone System Review

As we discussed, your homework is as follows:

• Find something that represents your assigned zone.
• Take a meter reading with your 35mm film camera.
• Write down the recommended exposure and calculate the correct exposure for your zone.
• Take a digital photo of your subject.
• On this blog - post the photo, a description of what it is, the zone, your recommended exposure and the calculated exposure.

Do all of the above before the beginning of class on Wednesday, 10/12.  See you then!

First day of class!

Are you ready to photographically rule the school?  This year you will all reach new creative and technical heights.  I am so excited to work with you and see what you will do!  As we begin, here are some links that will be helpful: our course guidelines, in class library assignment and, our first major project of the year, the homage assignment.  Happy shooting!
